Moving to the Netherlands
Land here with your finances already sorted.
Registrations, your first-year obligations, the M tax return and someone who talks to the Dutch tax office so you do not have to. In English, from before you arrive.
Immigration is not ours
Visas and permits are a separate profession. We work alongside immigration advisers, including Cardon for the American DAFT route, and we can introduce you.
What your first year looks like
A handful of processes that all start at once, in a language you do not read yet.
A registration, and then several more
A Chamber of Commerce number is the start. A VAT number follows, and a payroll tax number the moment you pay yourself. Each is a separate process with its own waiting time.
A first year that is not a full year
You arrive part way through. That affects your first set of accounts, your first tax return and, if you have a company, the length of your first financial year.
The M return for the year you arrived
The year you become a Dutch resident is filed on a different form from every year after it. It is more work than a normal return and it is easy to get wrong.
Two countries looking at the same income
Income earned before you moved, or still coming in from abroad, has to be handled consistently on both sides.
More than bookkeeping
Four choices made in your first months.
Each of these is decided once, usually in a hurry, and then quietly shapes every year that follows.
These are examples of topics we may review. Any advice depends on your individual circumstances.
-
Sole proprietorship or a BV
The right answer depends on what you expect to earn, what you want to take out and whether you need an employer here. It is much cheaper to decide well than to change later.
-
When your first financial year should end
Starting mid-year gives you a choice. It changes when your first accounts are due and what your first tax bill looks like.
-
Where you are tax resident, and from when
The date matters more than people expect. It decides which income belongs in the Dutch return and which does not.
-
Whether the 30% ruling is realistic for you
It runs through payroll, so it needs a Dutch employer, usually your own BV. It is not automatic for someone who moved on their own initiative. Worth checking before you build a structure around it.
What we take care of
From the first registration to your first full Dutch tax year.
Get your personal quote- Chamber of Commerce and VAT registration, including the questions that follow
- Your payroll tax number, requested and set up
- Your bookkeeping from day one, in English

A price built around your situation
Your legal form, revenue, invoice volume, bank accounts and payroll determine your fixed monthly fee. One-off work such as the M return is quoted separately, so you can see it.
Questions we get a lot
- Is tax advice included in the monthly fee?
- Yes. Every package includes a number of advice hours per year. Only special situations fall outside that, and those are quoted before we start, so you are never surprised by an invoice.
- Can you help before I arrive?
- Yes, and earlier is better. Several choices, including your legal form and when your first financial year ends, are easier to make well before you start than to repair afterwards.
- Do you handle my visa or residence permit?
- No. That is immigration work and a separate profession. We work alongside immigration advisers, including Cardon for the American DAFT route, and we are happy to introduce you.
- I still have income from my home country. Can you handle that?
- We file the Dutch side and coordinate with your adviser abroad so both returns tell the same story. If there is a foreign entity involved we look at your case personally rather than sending an automatic quote.
- What is the M form exactly?
- It is the income tax return for the year you moved to or from the Netherlands, covering the period you were a resident and the period you were not. It replaces the ordinary return for that one year.
- What does it cost?
- A fixed monthly fee for the ongoing work, with one-off items such as the M return quoted separately. Answer eleven questions and your personal quote arrives within 15 minutes.
